Curiosities only locals know

๐Ÿฎ

Sappamukki, when the cows come home

Every year in September, the cows that have spent the summer in the alpine pastures of Val Sesis come down to Sappada accompanied by herders in traditional costumes. The cows are decorated with flowers, colourful ribbons and bells: the most beautiful one wears a crown. The village stops to welcome them with music, food and celebrations that last all day. Sappamukki isn't a tourist re-enactment: it's a living, authentic tradition, experienced by the local community as a moment of celebration and gratitude for the season just passed.

Sappadan Carnival, masks from the Middle Ages

The Sappada Carnival is one of the oldest and most distinctive Alpine carnivals in Italy, with medieval roots and Tyrolean influences. The protagonists are the Rollate, grotesque hand-carved wooden masks, with deafening cowbells, parading through the village chasing onlookers. A tradition protected and passed down for generations, far from commercial carnivals. If you happen to be in the area in February, it's a truly unique experience.

The former Dolomites railway and the Great War

The cycle path that starts from the house runs on the former Dolomites Railway (1921โ€“1964): tunnels, bridges and old stations still intact. That railway was built right during the First World War, when Cadore was a war zone. The Monte Ricco forts and the trenches in the woods are visible signs of that dramatic period.

Franco Battiato mentioned Pieve di Cadore in a song

The great Sicilian singer-songwriter Franco Battiato included Pieve di Cadore in the song "Scalo a Grado" (1982): "my style is as old as Titian's house in Pieve di Cadore". The track was later used by Nanni Moretti in the film Bianca (1984). An unexpected link between Sicily, auteur cinema and the Dolomites.
